Backcountry Bourbon is an unfiltered, single barrel bourbon aged in Colorado an average of 18 months in American white oak barrels. The barrels are charred to level 3 allowing the wood sugars to caramelize and bring out the caramel and vanilla flavors of the oak. We bottle the bourbon based on the smoothness of taste rather than a pre-determined timeframe and have found that 16-20 months is about the right timeframe for the bourbon to develop the subtleties of aroma and flavor that make it the perfect drink to share amongst friends.
We proof our bourbon with crystal clear Rocky Mountain Cache la Poudre River Basin water and bottle it in Berthoud, Colorado. The bourbon is bottled directly from the barrel unfiltered, preserving the wood flavors of caramel and vanilla gained from the aging period. Bottling unfiltered gives the bourbon its cloudy appearance and preserves the unique backcountry “caramel and vanilla wood” flavors that cold filtering tends to remove.
